Snot
In 1998, Snot got picked up for the Ozzfest tour, which helped further cement their name in the collective consciousness of Metalheads worldwide. Even with that in mind, there was trouble on the horizon for the band. In and around that time, Universal and Polygram were undergoing a merger, which gravely affected those on the Geffen imprint. This ran the risk of the band being cut loose from their contract, which ran the potential for Snot to be unsigned once more. Undaunted, the band persevered, and went into the studio to begin working on their second album. However, their original vision for that album would never come into fruition, as tragedy would strike later on that year.
On December 11, 1998, while on his way to a Sugar Ray concert, Lynn Strait's car was struck by a truck on the 101 freeway near Santa Barbara. Lynn, as well as his dog, a boxer named Dobbs, were killed in the accident. He was only 30 years old at the time. Despite Snot being more of an underground commodity, this tragic event sent shockwaves through the world of Rock and Metal. To honor Lynn's memory, the remainder of the band, as well as a collective of various vocalists including Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath, Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, Korn's Jonathan Davis, Coal Chamber's Dez Fafara, as well as many others collaborated on the tribute album entitled "Strait Up", using material the band had been working on with Lynn prior to his tragic death. Strait Up was released on November 7, 2000 on Immortal records, and since has become scarcely out of print. On July 30, 2002, a live album was released entitled "Snot Alive!", which was originally recorded in May of 1998.
